CHINA: GOBI DESERT
OFF THE GRID CHINA: THE GOBI DESERT
THE GOBI DESERT
The largest desert in Asia and the fourth largest in the world, the Gobi Desert is a vast expanse of land spread across northern China and southern Mongolia, through which the ancient Silk Road once spanned. Dunhuang, or ‘Blazing Beacon’ was the center of cultural and economic exchanges between the East and West and is today a hotspot for travelers wanting to access the desert that traders formerly feared. From here, the Yangguan Pass, formerly one of the two most important passes of the Great Wall, is easy accessible. Though today it is largely reduced to trace hints of architectural design, the view from the pass remains as breathtaking as ever – desolate, yet beautiful desert stretches out as far as the eye can see.
