Myanmar: Introduction

To venture into the thick fibers of Myanmar is to venture 50 years previous in time’s fabric. Burmese men don skirt-like longyi, while women blot thanaka, or powdered bark make-up, on their face; children respect their elders and visitors are addressed as brother or sister from the point of introduction. Ornate temples dot the landscape and lavish pagodas stud vast plains, ancient monuments adorn the city center while ox drawn carts creep down the bumpy roads of the countryside. This is Myanmar; a land where material means little and the military rules everything. However, few will dispute that a unique wealth radiates throughout the country; in its fabulous panoramas, rich tapestry of heritage and unrivaled collection of temples, pagodas and cultures.
